Customers

I never want to work in a customer service job again.

I have a couple of customers who decided to give portraits to their family as gifts this year, all nice and good. Except one thing, they decided this three weeks before Christmas. So the sitting was on December 1. The proofs for the sitting came up about a week later and on Monday they came in to pick which one they wanted. Except they had to see the retouching would look like. So it is all retouched and I showed them a sample. They didn't like it. He was too red (he has a red complexion-it is what he looks like) she looked washed out (the retouched one actually put more color in her face). Gahhh. Our retouch artist was already off for the day by the time I had the retouched sample and so they were telling me what was wrong with it. Then he said "It would be nice if we could talk to her ourselves." When I told them she was off for the day he said "You really should have this better coordinated." I wanted to tell him, "Hey it isn't my fault you decided to do this so late." Seriously, our price list says very clearly, all portriats take four to six weeks upon order. They are wanting theirs in nine days.
Then as they were leaving I heard her say "I think we picked the wrong place." I can bet that no other photographer would have said they could much less would do it in time for Christmas.
Gah.

I hate customers.

Customers truly are idiots. But I will back that up by saying, *American* customers are idiots. In Romania, customer service is not expected. In fact, often times store owners can be down right rude. Americans expect to have it their way, right away. They really don't see that oftentimes what they want isn't *possible*. And then their anwer is "Well, it should be!" The one thing I wish I could do to customers is this: In my most patronizing tone explain to them why what they want isn't possible and they will not find it any other way anywhere else. I would tell them, I am here to serve you... but *only* on my terms.
